I have had fires on the ice before with one of those firepits that have the bowl bottom, screen sides, and top. (Fleet Farm purchase) That should be legal anywhere in MN, but I’m not totally sure. I would assume that having a fire directly on the ice may not be legit.

It is very illiegal to have a fire on the ice, that is directly on the ice! If you have it contained in a pit, your fine, but nothing directly on the ice.

Nascarfan, i agree. To me, it is similar to building crappie/sunfish houses or whatever they are called in the summer. They don’t want you introducing anything to the water, even if it is frozen.

Yea you are not supposted to have a fire directly on the ice because of the burnt wood hurts the fish and kills nuitrents the fish needs to survive the winter. A couple years back the dnr had a lake in Northern Michigan that had a major winter kill and found out that it was because of people were pouring gas and oil on the ice to start a fire. Its illegal in Wisconsin so im sure it is in Minnesota. So please dont start fires on the lakes.

This could be completely false but I thought I had heard of the dnr burning abandoned fish houses where they sat on the ice after the season. I thought about one year when we got 20″ of snow on glare ice the last day of the season and 4 of us were working for a couple of hours and only made it about a hundred yards. We ended up flipping it on its roof but the idea of burning it did come up.
you can't kill it or catch it sitting on the couch, I spend every minute I can outdoors.

There was a report that a person unable to move his fish house last year asked the CO if he could burn it. The CO said “no”. 20 minutes later there was a report of a fire on the lake..the guy did burn it and was fined for burning illegal material, burning on a lake and several other charges.
In the ’60s it was common pratice to pile up logs on the lake and make a bonfire when out ice fishing. I don’t think that sunflower heater and portables were very common at the time.
