Looking for opinions on what is a good heater for my 22×22 garage. Just need it to thaw off cars and dry out the floor, keep things from freezing.

my garage is 28 by 32 I keep it at 45 and if I need to work in there I will turn it up to 60. my garage has 2 by 6 walls with r 19 insulation and I think it is about r 30 in the ceiling. this is the first year I have the garage but I would guess I’m averaging about 20 dollars more a month. I had it at 60 for 4 days during the extreme cold snap as well

I have used house furnaces for the last 25 years. I like them since they pull cold air off the floor. I also run a ceiling fan 24 x 7 in the garage.

I keep the thermostat set at 40 – 45 in the winter. You need a special thermostat to do that. I think it is called a warehouse thermostat.

Thing to be aware of is that if you have a fridge in your garage… they do not work under 50 degrees. I lost alot of venison that way.

I have been able to find nice used furnaces for $200 on CL or other avenues.

I have a garage fridge and it works just fine until the garage gets well below freezing then it gets too cold in the fridge. Do you mean the freezer doesn’t work below 50? It should.

Mine is a house fridge,(ice and water in the door). maybe it is only the freezer part. Just like thermostats there are fridges that work in cold temps.

But everything in the freezer had thawed. The normal fridge temp is around 40 degrees so I am not sure I would know.

So we just bought a new house and it came with an old fridge in the garage. I also found out it does not work the best when it gets too cold. The freezer will not keep things frozen when it is too cold but the fridge part normalizes to the outside temp and will just get too cold. I’m not sure the exact terminology but the compressor part of the freezer generates heat which is why the freezer warms up when it is too cold.

I solved the problem by just cracking the freezer during that super cold stretch. We have an attached garage so most of the time it is already significantly warmer in there than outside. There is a heater kit you can rig up and put in the fridge that people use so that it forces the fridge to work even when its too cold outside. I’m just oging to put a deep freeze in my basement and use that instead of the freezer portion. Luckily I was watching it and didn’t lose any of my meat.

I believe the problem with refrigerators in cold garages is the thermostat is in the fridge section. You control the freezer based on a percentage of the coolant you send to the freezer section (mechanical damper). Since the thermostat is satisfied it does not run and the freezer warms up above the freezing point.

At least that is the way I understand it.

Yes sorry I left that part out too. But there is something in the freezer that generates heat which is why the freezer warms. Otherwise it would just normalize with the outside air also and your frozen stuff would stay frozen.
