Walked out of Barnacles on Saturday. They had 8 inches but it was in layers, so we stayed to the first break. Saw some others go much farther out, not worth it to me. I pulled this gator through an 8 inch hole using a medium, 26 inch, walleye rod with 8 lb line. I had no measuring device long enough to measure it. I’m saying 40+ for a conservative estimate. Released it back into the water.

At one point I told my fishing buddy he might have to reach in and grab it, and I was met with lots of swear words. lol
PS I’m getting lots of grief for not keeping it.

The guys I fish with have an unwritten rule that we would go shoulder deep for a fish like that. I’ve gone eblow deep many times to pull up big walleyes for buddies and they have returned the favor for me too. Last year at LOTW the hook fell out on a 24″ of my buddies that I went elbow deep scooping out of the hole. It’s just what you do. If your buddy wasn’t willing to do that for that giant fish I’d question whether he is really a friend or not.
