Having never fished Mille Lacs – only driven by it, the lake is a bit intimidating. Would like to try it for a weekend with my crank down shack over the winter but don’t know where to start. Got a bunch of questions:
Are there plowed public roads, or are all the roads accessed via the resorts? How much do resorts charge to use their roads for a weekend?
Also if a group of guys wanted to come up for a weekend, some would have to rent a house while others would probably sleep in my shack. Where would be a good rental place to put us on the fish, and would they allow us bring our own shack near theirs?
The only roads that get plowed are by the resorts but sometimes depending on snow and ice conditions you can access the lake by a public access. This however wouldnt be very wise if you arent familiar with the lake and most of the time isnt worth trying to save a few bucks.Price depends on the resort and some charge more than others for wheel houses.Best to figure out what part of the lake you want to fish then call around or check their websites for prices. There are a lot of good resorts on the lake but fish house rentals can vary from deluxe accomidations to horrible.Walleye fishing is usually best on early ice then as time goes on it is a morning evening thing unless you go out and chase them.Like I say if you are going to rent a shack up there and plan on fishing in it all day long rent a nice one so at least you are comfortable.

I would suggest going out of a resort with a plowed road. Figure out which side you want to fish and do some research. Almost every resort on the lake plows a road and rents houses.
Most will charge you about 10 bucks a day for bringing on your wheel house, but some are higher. Check around.
Best houses on the lake to rent are probably McQuiods. No matter who you rent them from, you are gonna probably want to bring a portable and go looking for fish. Especially if it is later in the year. Most places will do their best to stay on a bite, but in my experiences, they are usually a couple days behind the go-getters that are moving their house every day or two. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />
One other piece of advice. When setting up your own house, I would make sure that you are away from guys and hitting very lightly pressured or spots that haven’t had any pressure at all yet. Stay ahead of the game and you will catch fish up there.

Hey Jimmy, you can be my guide this winter!
Probably the other way around. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />
I should be up there from first drivable ice for sure, probably when you can get houses out with wheelers until about the 2nd or 3rd week in Jan. We could give er a go.
Any resort will try to put you on fish. Best not to venture to far until you know the lake. There can be a lot of pressure rigges and cracks. I like Lyback’s resort on the South end just out of Wahkon. Lots of structure for early season wallys.
