As long as we can drive on the big pond by the middle of december, I think a lot of us will be happy. Also this year, I think that everyone will need to add 12″ to their auger by late jan. because I have a feeling that the ice will be thick this year. Ya Whoo!!!!

The way that this weather ahs been i dont think we will have safe ice here in the metro till about mid december. The weather is so spotty it is cold for a couple days then warm for a couple days then cold again . There is no way of building good ice with that type of forecast

I’ll say we’ll be walking on in my area about December 15th give or take a few days. That is about average. End of December – January 1st is usually about the time they let trucks drive out on Mille Lacs and usually good to go around home to drive about a week later.

The longer the trucks stay off Tonka the better last was great most of the year you could only get out with 4 wheelers…..People act like dumb a#@ on the like in there trucks ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> It stayed pretty calm out there last year and it really seemed to keep the eye bite going longer then normal. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

Cooler months are usually followed by above average months. The current 10-day forcast is for temps in the 40s-50s. At BEST, 2nd weekend in December in Central MN.

I was at Mille Lacs on Saturday the 21st and the water temp in Isle Bay was 39 degrees.
Judging by that, I would say we’re going to have an early ice up this year. If the temps hold, I would not be surprised to see people fishing before Thanksgiving on smaller lakes.

I’ve heard it said a dozen or so times over the years…you can walk, but don’t drive on the ice until after the December freeze. That is the few days we get 20-30F. below zero with winds and it stays below zero for a week, then it’s time to head out to the holes. This is usually after the Christmas Holiday in the metro area.
