Somehow I spent my entire life fishing in the metro without being aware that there is a continuous catch and release season downstream from the Ford Dam!
First off, yes, I’m an idiot, apparently! Always been a lake fisherman, but started doing some river fishing (Missouri river in ND and Snake in WY) last summer on a long trip, and now I see ‘the light’
But I figure with the decent looking weather for this weekend, I might wanna try for some eyes and smallies instead of harassing the stunted crappies in my usual hangouts.
Anybody been down around the Minnehaha Creek or Hidden Falls area? Curious how high the water is and if there are any good shore fishing spots you might be able to recommend. No need to give up your honey holes, but any pointers on places I can get to on foot and/or lures/techniques that work this time of year would be nice
The current is ripping along at over 32,000 fps rite now and the river is high. Was down last week in the boat and some spots that were producing fish were changing by the hour.I cant really reccomend a shore fishing spot other then find anything that breaks the current even in a couple feet of water there should be some fish around. The dam down past Hidden Falls and beyond is all public so Im sure you can find something. The bite was pretty good then the water started rising by the hour and the fish moved and I havnt been able to get back since and relocate them hopefully this weekend tho.Jig and minnow jig and plastic was working good at the time for me anyways.Good Luck.
Drove across the Ford Bridge last evening, and the river is bank to bank and rising.
It should get a bit floody when this white crap from today North of the cities melts tomorrow though the end of the week.
The mouth of Minnihaha Creek at the river can be okay, but as the water rises this time of year you have to kind of get up on the big storm sewer outlet.
There is a rock pile off the front of the outlet that can hold fish in high water.
You can park (or could, watch for signs) at the end of the park road that parallels Hiawatha, and there were concrete steps leading down to the creek. They came out about 100 yards from the river.
Good Luck, and be careful with that rising water!!
Yeah I figure the river is high with the last couple weeks of melt, that’s kinda why I was thinking those areas – lots of storm drains that are bound to slow the current a bit. Plus, they give you somewhere to stand hahaha
Decided to head down there this afternoon – water is high, river is going gangbusters.
nothing biting for me, but a few guys landing boats at Hidden Falls launch said they were gettin decent ‘eyes up by the dam.
Next time I’ll try the Minnehaha side.
Hit up the minnehaha side after cuttin outta work early on this beautiful afternoon – there were quite a few people fishing the mouth of the creek, but not catching much. Saw a couple small eyes, a hammerhandle northern, some carp. Threw everything in my tackle box for about 5 hours, and got no bites. just before giving up, put a crawler on a harness, and finally got my first fish of the year – a tiny little walleye then I had to go, right as the bite was coming on at sunset. Probly left at the worst time, but I had to get up the stairs to se salt for dinner and a beer with the girlfriend.

Our WP guys have been on the river all week looking for a car that went in, heard that the river was as high a 47,000 fps early in the week. They are not recommending recreational boat traffic at all…
I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
was down there this evening, and the river is ripping again. water is up the base of the last bridge. didnt see anybody catch anything in the 3 hours I spent around the mouth, despite there being guys fishing the mouth, and a few fishing up the creek.
