I spun the hub on my prop a week ago. It is a 4 blade aluminum Quicksilver 14 X 18 prop on a Yamaha F150. The guy in the next cabin had a like new 4 blade Solas aluminum 14.8 X 18 prop that had been his spare on his previous boat, so he sold it to me. The prop saved the last 2 days of the trip but I was shocked that I lost close to 700 RPMs and about 6mph on the top end. Should .8 inches in diameter cause that much difference with the same pitch or is it more likely that there is some other reason the Merc and Solas props perform so much differently?
I replaced the hub on the old prop and the Solas will be good enough for a spare but I’m amazed there could be that much difference between the 2.
