I went out to Carlo’s Avery yesterday to do some squirrel hunting with my brother in law Yesterday.
but we where left empty handed.
we both hit the woods hard and saw many squirrel track and nesting
but still did not see any squirrels at all..
it was very strange not to see any movement at all..
we tried to sit for hours under a tree and still no squirrels anywhere
the only thing we saw out there was a couple of birds.
what is your strategy for finding these little critters in very tough situations like this.
I tried the squirrels calls and still nothing..
I’m telling you it was very still out there yesterday with no movement at all..
what would cause this that nothing is moving..
we did run across some coyote tracks..in an area..

Like you guys, I like to find a spot and sit in for 30-45 minutes before I move to a new one.
I get out of the city further though.
I like the St Croix river bottoms up past Rush City. There are lots of old Oak ridges up there that are close to corn fields, and the land owners are usually happy to have you thin a few of the crop eaters out.

Ok
so we headed out again the other day and today..with no luck..
We sat for an hour up next to a tree..we can see Squirrel track and some den’s in the trees..but still no movement at all in tree’s or on the ground…no birds flying, just dead..
the only movement I saw was a field mice..
came across several buck rubs and coyote poop, but still no movement of squirrels or rabbits..nothing not even ducks flying over..
I’m hunting Carlo’s avery and I refuses to believe this is do to heavy hunting of others.
as we been seeing tracks..
we trying different areas and still nothing.
whats going on.. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

I haven’t hunted squirrel since I was a kid. It doesn’t sound like you are doing anything wrong. I wouldn’t sit as long as you would. i would sit for 20-30 mins then move on. I’ve never hunted at Carlos Avery as its too close to the city and i don’t like being crowded when I hunt. I would drive a little farther if I were you.
I think there is probably enough squirrel guys down toward the city to knock out a good chunk of the young of the year squirrels very early in the season every year (like a lot of grouse areas)…all I have ever heard about Carlos Avery wma is a lot of people….my suggestion would b to go somewhere a little less popular with the crowds….but even up my way the the wma’s and whatnot seem to get hunted by squirrel hunters quite often and most of them are from St.cloud or further south (I live by camp Ripley)
