My folks have a cabin on the river just north of William O’Brien State Park, about 10 miles north of Stillwater. We fish from the dock a lot. We can catch sturgeon throughout the summer, but the best time to catch them seems to be late July & early August.

The upper Croix and lower Croix (Taylors falls south) are pretty different stretches of river, and there is 169miles between source and mouth. The Upper river is for the most part, fast and shallow, while the lower river has some hoes that are close to 100′ deep.

Having fished the upper quite a bit, it’s not too hard to find them. Find a deeper hole (15′ or deeper) and anchor on the upstream edge of the the hole and you will contact fish. Pretty much anywhere you fish, you have have a chance, but holes tend to harbor bigger fish.

Can anyone give me a decent spot from shore to fish for anything other than panfish? We would like to fish for cats walleye or sturgeon but are having a tough time finding a PUBLIC spot to set up shop for the night.

We would be fishing the mn side. Anywhere from taylor falls to hudson
