Curious about peoples opinions on this—-after a few days of a good wind out on the pond to stir the water up do you find the fish biting better when it does get calm? Just because everything settles down or would you really rather have the wind this time of year as well?

During the fall shallow water period what temps year in and year out seem to get the most fish going?

I can’t tell you for sure about temps but I’d say lower 50’s are good.

I think we do better once the weeds lay down so you can troll over them.

I don’t think you need wind to make the bite go in the fall. I think like skin said it has more to do with water temps. Under 50 seems to be best for bigger fish.
I would just as soon fish in the calm at night. It is more peaceful and usually hasn’t mattered to the fish it seems.

I think water temp has more to do with it than the wind or moon. Also like Skindog mentioned the weeds get knocked down and the bait has less cover. At some point these fish are going to decide that winter is coming and there will be a lot more moving in to feed. The bite seems to start going around 55 degrees and seems like more fish show up around 50.If you noticed lately the fish you have cleaned probably had very little in their belly. This is going to change and you will see them stuffed with perch.Ive been doing this for about 20 years and I can tell ya one thing the fishing gets more consistant when the weather takes a turn towards winter like it is doing now.I can also tell ya back then I was the only boat launching out of Eddys at this time of year. The good old days <img decoding=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> Ill bet you see the reports dramatically improve this weekend.

The lake I guide on in S/E WI starts to turn over at 53/54 degrees. When turnover starts the weeds die off and the algie clumps along with brown dead weeds start floating up to the top. If it’s calm enough you can actually see some bubbles coming up to the surface.

This is the worst fishing time of the Fall since the fish will all scatter everyware for about 1 week to as much as 10 days. After things settle down and they will start showing up in small schools but, not like in the Summer and early Fall periods.

Mille Lacs doesnt have a thermal kline(sp) so no turn over but it does get an algae bloom in late summer that can make fishing tough.
