Thanks for the tip, BBB! I haven’t even been out yet this year, and I’m chomping at the bit to get the boat in the water!
Matthew 5 : 1-16The steadiness of that camera is absolutely amazing!!! Great quality picture as well.
What a cool idea! Can you make that hover out away from the boat, set down the controller, and allow it to film you while you land a fish?
Matthew 5 : 1-16If we don’t get significant rainfall soon I’m guessing you folks (on the Red River of the North) will see most of the cats remain down your way.
The Red Lake River here in TRF is as low as I’ve ever seen it, and particularly so early in the spring! I’m not optimistic right now that we’re going to see much for fishing opportunities up our way until we see the water levels rise at least a little bit.
Glad to see you guys are spanking em’ down river!
Matthew 5 : 1-16There you are, Jim! Thrilled that you connected on this giant! Way to go bud!
Matthew 5 : 1-16Fished pike off of Morris Point, and Zipple Bay this weekend. Shockingly, and disappointingly slow. Over two full days of fishing we caught 2 30-inch fish, and spent hours and hours staring at dead flags.
As I considered why fishing was so slow at a time of year when it should’ve been pretty fast and furious, all I could come up with was the weather change on Saturday.
We’d had above freezing daytime temps for nearly three weeks in a row, then Saturday morning it was 8 degrees, and it never got above freezing all day. Same thing Saturday night into Sunday morning. Clear blue skies and a fairly sharp rise in barometric pressure must have shut em’ down pretty hard. It was a beautiful weekend to be out fishing, but the fish just didn’t cooperate.
On a positive note, a friend from Wisconsin, TrophyPikeHunter, managed to land a 39, and a 44-inch giant on Saturday afternoon! Fishing was extremely slow for his group as well, but at least they pulled a true Lake of the Woods tanker! Hope to see him post pics of this fish, because it really is a monster, and she’s still swimming out there!!! So happy to see him catch this fish! He’s dedicated three years to finding a true trophy pike, and a 44-inch fish definitely is a great accomplishment for any fishermen! Great job, Jim!
Forecast looks decent for the remainder of this week, with some snow and possible rain mid-week, but the temps look to really jump up again next Saturday, and I’m gonna guess that may just be the end. Everything was frozen up pretty solid this weekend, but if the temps jump up that high again it’s going to turn the lake into deep slush everywhere.
We made our way out, via ATV, onto Zipple Bay on Sunday, and we were the ONLY group out there almost all day on Sunday. Fair warning, we did see an area just inside the jetty with thin ice over what was OPEN WATER just a few days earlier! Don’t try and run machines thru the jetty area off of Zipple Bay! If you do head out there cross the sand berms and stay away from the channel thru the jetty.
Hope to make another trip up for late ice pike, but it will all depend on the weather.
Matthew 5 : 1-16There’s 3+ feet of ice on the lake, and there are big puddles of water on the roads.
Some landings are closing. Roads are bad.
We’ll still be fishing for a while yet, whenever, and wherever we can get on the ice. The good late ice bite hasn’t even started yet.
Matthew 5 : 1-16It might not turn out as bad as we thought.
Latest forecast is calling for the majority of the really warm weather to miss the lake. Prolly gonna get up in the 40’s, maybe even 50 this weekend, but not 60 or 70 like what was originally being forecast.
Next week looks to cool down with temps only in the high 30’s and low 40’s. It’s going to melt, but not as fast as it looked like it would.
Seems like we might get a decent late ice pike bite yet!
Matthew 5 : 1-16Red River Valley weatherman said tonight that the big warm up is supposed to stay primarily south and west of the lake.
Likely to get into the 40’s, but not into the 60’s or 70’s, so it may not be quite as bad this weekend, or next week, as it originally sounded?
Matthew 5 : 1-16What TW says is spot on! Call up to the lake the day before, and the day you make the trip up. It’s going to change pretty fast this week.
Don’t know what the long term forecast is calling for, but if it stays like it is we won’t have to worry about ice on the lakes for the fishing opener this year!
Matthew 5 : 1-16Right now, it’s too early to say. It’s warm up here, and supposed to get warmer all week. Possible record high temps?
The ice will likely be fine for a while, but it’s going to be a big sloppy mess on the lake for most of the week.
As for the landings, that’s anyone’s guess right now.
Matthew 5 : 1-16Chris. It’s going to be a wet, sloppy mess, but the ice should be fine.
Matthew 5 : 1-16ffd. They really seem to be an ancillary catch for those chasing walleyes and saugers.
I’m not too sure anyone really targets this species out there, so I’m not too sure anyone could really point you in a specific direction?
One thing for sure, they are prolific out there. Fish on your typical walleye/sauger haunts and you’ll almost certainly catch some tullibee as well. Some days you’ll catch 3 tullies to one walleye or sauger, and some days you only catch a few for the whole day.
Matthew 5 : 1-16It might get a little wet and sloppy, but that shouldn’t stop you from fishing.
Just come prepared to block the house up a bit on top of the ice.
You’ll be fine. Call up to the lake a day or two before you come and check to see what the ice road conditions are like.
Matthew 5 : 1-16It’s a giant Wells Catfish. I’ve seen a lot of em’ on various fishing shows and such, but I’ve NEVER seen one that big!
That thing could eat a small child!!!!
Matthew 5 : 1-16I’ll tell you this much for sure, toward the end of March and into April (if we still have good ice) walleye fishing will get MUCH better! It always does with late ice.
That being said, it certainly can’t get any worse!!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha haaa!!!!
Okay…..that seemed very funny to me…..
