10 pm is great! And basically on my way home too, thanks for passing along. Looking at the facebook page I see a price per deer, do they make summer sausage/brats/sticks etc too?

I hunt private land so I can drag it out of the woods and get to work on it right away if needed. I would get it hung up and skin off as fast as possible and get to work on quartering it. Once the quarters are safely on ice in a cooler than you’ve got some time to get it taken care of.

If you’re going to take it in some place I would get it out of the woods and get ice in the chest cavity as fast as possible. I would lay the deer down on a tarp in the bed of your truck, trailer, whatever you have. Get as much ice in the cavity as you can and then maybe get a few extra bags of ice around the deer to get it cooling off. Then wrap the entire thing in up in the tarp to hold at least some of the cold in. You could also consider covering with a heavy blanket or something to insulate the tarp and to keep the ice cold longer. Then get it dropped off and into their coolers as fast as you can.

Really everything after you located your dead deer isn’t so bad as long as you plan ahead and have your game plan laid out. That part just takes a bit of prep and pre planning. The hard part is making sure you’re only taking high percentage shots with the best odds of a quick recovery. If you need to leave a deer lay out over night do to a poor shot odds are the deer won’t be much good the next morning unless you get lucky and it lives until just before you start your tracking the next day.

Yeah that weather is keeping me home this weekend. I could hunt 2 of the first 3 weekends so I’m picking the next 2 and sitting this one out. Forecast for next weekend in my area is highs in the 50’s and lows in the 40’s so much better.

I know the heat isn’t ideal but people down south have to always be hunting in this heat. I’ll be out there, I generally hate the heat but think sitting in the shade will be nice and I won’t be freezing my tits off for once while deer hunting. And I’ll actually put cold coffee in my thermos which will be great.

Yes, he makes about 15 different rtypes of sausage. Good stuff, too.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: "Wow, what a ride!"

Well it was great to get out yesterday, was not successful but still beats sitting at work!

Anybody else make it out? The mosquitos were the worst i’ve ever experienced, a little more breeze would have been nice in that heat too but wasn’t horrible sitting in the shade in the woods.

                      Anybody have success yet?

I was able to get out again this morning. Had a real small spike give me a perfect broadside shot at 15 yards, but I passed because he was so small. Got to watch 26 turkeys fly from their roost just after sunrise too which was a lot of fun.

Was out last weekend. Saturday AM had a decent 8 come in right after legal shooting hours started. I’m guessing it came in to investigate what the noise was all about. Just as I got to my stand and was attaching my bow to the haul line I had a skunk walk right through my set up. I retreated a few yards behind a tree to avoid starting my season by getting sprayed. This delayed me getting into my stand and caused a bit more commotion than I would have liked. Finally the skunk waddled off so i was able to climb up and get situated.

The only shot I had on the buck was a head on shot at about 25 yards. I passed. I’d have never gotten my bow drawn anyways since he was looking right at me. He didn’t blow out of there and just put his head down and meandered off a ways and I think bedded down again but I couldn’t see for sure. About an hour later he blew out of there snorting and causing a ruckus. Not sure what he think he saw but the wind was perfect for me and I was perfectly still. I’m guessing he didn’t even know what he was worried about he just didn’t like it.

Saturday PM only action came from a grouse that dive bombed me 3-4 times. It was a cranky grouse that really wanted me out of the tree I guess. I had to swat it with my hat to get it to leave me alone.

Sunday was a miserable day. Wet, windy, and cold. I hunted the AM and then stayed in to watch the vikings game. I should have stayed out in the wind and rain.

I’ll be back out this weekend for Saturday AM and PM and Sunday AM.

That’s funny about the grouse, do you keep a small game head on one of your arrows?

I don’t. I’m on private land and the landowner has put grouse on the untouchable list. He likes having them around so they are off limits. He does want me to take as many rabbits as I can so perhaps a small game head should be in my quiver but so far its not.

Really the only rabbits I see are in the yard and he usually handles those himself.

Oh gotcha. Last year during rifle season I had a grouse keep landing on a downed dead tree 30 yards out. I’m keeping a small game head on an arrow just in case he decides to again

Wow that is an action packed night. Why did you pass on the 8pointer?
