Sometime in April. That’s the best I can come up with. I can remember as a kid, I had relatives in Duluth and we would go up there for the smelt run. It was a big party. You could fill a trash can in less than 5 minutes if you were in the right spot. Today, I thi k the numbers are down and not too many people do it anymore. Give marine general in Duluth a call, they may have some information, maybe not.
Earliest predicted was mid April all depends on weather and with what’s forecasted I’m gonna say more like around the 20th or so…keep in touch I’ll b hitting it up pretty hard this year

We need some good spring rains for the rivers which are low for this time of the year. Lot of smelting goes on by Park Point on the lake side with seine nets. good luck.

Ya, way too early. This weekend is a waste of time for smelting. Maybe by next weekend on. The river banks still have ice on them in most streams. Park point is a no go as well at this time. good luck.

Was out in the boat Saturday and the surface temps were 35 (with skim ice along the duluth shore) in the early AM and up to 37 later.
Smelt were out in 60′ of water, just clouds of them on the locator.
With a pretty warm, but dry, week ahead I would think that maybe by next week things will start. I’m still thinking the weekend of the 25th will be close.
there has been a few netted off of park point as of day before yesterday…I know one group that got a few early then nothing…its the beginning that’s for sure…the couple local die hard smelters that I know r figuring this wkend should b pretty good ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> I know i won’t b waiting til next wk. The streams r questionable this spring at best

Looks like it will be this week/weekend for the start. Old timers always told me when the spring peepers started the smelt would run, and I heard them for the first time last night at the house.
Thinking Im gonna try to get down this weekend and make a few pulls.
Will check water temps (coastwatch was updated on the 11th but not since) on thursday AM. Did hear that some of the coho caught off the wall have been full of 4″ smelt tho.

The reports are still fairly slow on Park Point.
One group got about a gallon right at dark over a week ago then they quit for a few days. Most reports since are 1-30 per pull. Rivers are still a ways out.
We tried Chequmagon last night and it was pretty much over. We tried several spots from Cornocopia to Ashland. The run there started Sunday before last and peaked late last week. In 3 nights up there we managed around 3 tons. Decent year but not as good as 5 years ago. That year it was 7+ nights of massive run. 1 hr and you got a ton. The big night this year we ran the 50 & 75 purse seines, 5 people dark-3:30am.
