Sounds like something positive for the businesses around the Mille Lacs community if things pan out. It’s not a cure, but will help them in the waiting game of the DNR and our legislators doing what is best for the lake and the community that makes their living from it.

      Write our legislator!

Will, it is probably unfortunate that we do, but there will be no change with out them making it. So, we need to advocate and lobby them for the change.

While Senator Brown and Rep Erickson are not coming out and calling for the netting to end. It seems to me they are making some baby steps to get there.

These statements are the hookand liners always wanting more. The lake is hurting but push for more and laxed rules.Rape the resource
            The first one
Resorters like Bill Eno of Twin Pines and Suzy Fisher of Fisher’s Resort made comments about the difficulties of running night launches when they have to be into shore by 10 p.m. to abide by the night ban rule. Fisher proposed the option of pushing the ban back by 30 minutes or an hour to allow for the launches to leave their fishing spot at 10 p.m. to maximize the fishing time for guests. She questioned what effect that time change would have on the reduction of kill.

            Then a realistic reply
When posed the question as to what the DNR would have done differently, Rick Bruesewitz, Aitkin fisheries supervisor, responded that he wouldn’t have let the resorters push and push for more fish each year to include more liberalized regulations. He said that perhaps that’s why they are in this situation now.

            the netters UH??

Dew everyone that is a regular here know what side of this you are on. Did you read the Star Tribune by Dick Stenberg who is a former DNR fisheries biologist who 12 years ago forecast problems for the lake’s walleyes?Read here

He is obviously an expert and not some “barstool biologist” . You see there are experts out there that do not agree with what is going on and see through the “scam” that is taking place at the top of the DNR.

The last 3 years have given us 3 different explanations as to what is going on with the lake, all of them being very different. There are many factors that are effecting the lake right now, some are controllable and some are not. The DNR needs to control the factors it can on the lake in the name of conservation. It is conservation that was given as the only factor that could lead to change by the supreme court.

              con·ser·va·tion [kon-ser-vey-shuhn]

              noun

              1. the act of conserving; prevention of injury, decay, waste, or loss; preservation: conservation of wildlife; conservation of human rights.

              2. official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management.

              3. a district, river, forest, etc., under such supervision.

              4. the careful utilization of a natural resource in order to prevent depletion.

DEW please explain to me why they continue to allow nets to be set during the spawn. You find a common theme throughout the management of most fish species in the DNR regulations, it is closed seasons. Closed season are an important function of protecting the resource. This is from the DNR web site http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fish/walleye/management.html

On most waters, closed seasons protect walleye during spawning.

The DNR needs to practice what they preach and protect the spawn and preserve the resource(see definition #2) in the name of conservation…

Us hook and liners just want the lake back to what it was before the gillnets made Mille Lacs what it is today.
It took 15 years to get where it is now.

we had a 6 fish limit with 1 over 20″

Everywhere that has been netted, the lake has been ruined. Look at Wisconsin, and their 1 fish limit for anglers because the netters have wiped out the walleyes.

Gillnetting must be banned during the spawning period to allow the walleyes to replentish the population.http://www.fisheriessociety.org/proofs/walleye/chapter6.pdf

Nobody wants DNR to shake in their boots they want them to help fix the lake and make it better for all fisherman. This site lets you give your opinion one way or the other on this very important subject. You have the right to spread the word as you see fit that is why I and others have served this great nation for freedom and freedom of speech. But we also served so ALL MEN are treated EQUAL and no race no matter which one can not have more rights than any other race. I have said this before, if one MAN can use a net than all men can use a net but the people who care about the lake and understand netting during the spawn will eventually destroy the lake than the ones that care wouldn’t even use them.

There are many reasons for the decline of walleyes in Mille lacs lake but if you don’t think taking hundreds of thousands of egg laying walleyes (with nets) out of the equation year after year after year after year you are mistaken. The men and women that are trying to save this lake are trying their hardest. I wish them luck and hope the future looks brighter for Mille lacs……Kirk

I agree with stopping netting during the spawning season. It makes absolutely no sense and you would think the native population would realize this and agree to stop this during this period. There is no reasonable argument that can be made to condone this by any party on this issue. good luck.

You’re right RH… Jim Zorn of GLIFWC was asked this & his analogy- It’s like nonnatives going to the grocery store when a sale is on.

                                  Kirk,
Well said and to the point, after 6 years active duty in the Marines I have personally witnessed the wonders of having the ability to FREEDOM of SPEECH. Its not the same in other countries.

Although I have to ask, how is it that article after article from the DNR about Mille Lacs, and they never once mention the word MUSKY. I guess there are no MUSKIES in Lake Mille Lacs, and even if there were, they would never eat a Walleye. No where does the DNR discuss the fact that the regulations maybe changed to 50″ minimum statewide. Maybe it already has been changed, 2 or 3 years ago the State Musky assoc, was inquiring about a statewide 56″ minimum for Musky.

I just notice that all the articles dicuss changes to the Smallies and Northern regs to help the Walleye population, but NOTHING is said about changes to the MUSKY regs to help out. I guess that is politically incorrect and a TOUCHY FEELY ISSUE. I know alot of area businesses cater to the MUSKY enthusiast, fishing guides especially. Then again maybe they will start to all die off due to old age, for no-one really seems to ever keep a Musky, even if its a wall hanger. With the season closed as of Dec 1 every year, theres not an Ice Fisherman out there that can legally keep one.
