Whiskey

Who are the whiskey drinkers out there and what do you drink? Irish, Japanese, Canadian, Bourbon or Rye it doesn’t matter I’m just looking for good ones. to date my 2 favorites are Angel Envy finished rye and Tullamore DEW XO. I have a bottle of midleton very rare 2016 but I’m not going to open it until something very special happens to me.

I drink a lot of different whiskey, bourbon and ryes. My current favorite is High West stuff right now.

I know price points of what everyone considers low price, mid price or high price are different. I think you can get a lot of really good bourbons in the $50-60 range and going much above that just isn’t needed. You can get a lot of good ones in the $30-40 range and some OK ones cheaper than that.

I usually stick in that mid range and a couple of my favorites are Makers 46 and Basil Haydens.

Cheaper my favorite is probably bulleit or bulleit rye

More expensive my favorite is… idk right now i’d probably say high west bourye but this will change all the time.

The real question is do you drink neat or on the rocks? When I get a new bottle I like to try it both ways, some I like better neat some I like better on the rocks.

One of my favorites is scotch whisky because there can be so many different flavors. To me, a lot of bourbons remind me of antique shopping with my mom when I was a kid, something about that old oak flavor/smell just doesn’t appeal. But with scotch you can choose what flavors you like and it’s still scotch and even though it’s aged in oak it avoids that sort of varnish flavor. For my taste, I’m mostly a speyside fan – think the “Glens” (glenlivet, glenfiddich, glen moray etc..) The base versions of each of those is not that expensive, around $25-40 give or take. Right now my absolute favorite is Talisker storm. It has more of the Islay character – that smokey peaty kind of flavor without a lot of the iodine notes that are really offputting of the really peaty stuff. A lot of scotch guys swear by single malt, which basically means it comes from one place and is distilled from barley. Blended or blended malt can be multiple distilleries or multiple malted grains. To be honest, sometimes blending is better because they taste for consistency. The reason some folks don’t like it is because it’s easier to hide poorer quality or younger whiskies. But it really comes down to what you like to sip, others be damned. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

I’m just getting into whiskey/bourbon. I had a group of friends over last summer and we all brought whatever bottles we had and did a tasting. We ended up with 25 bottles that spanned the spectrum.

By the end we put all 25 bottles in order from best to worst based on our collective opinions. The one real surprising standout was Rebel Yell Kentucky Bourbon. We all had it ranked in the top 4 right along side the $50-75 bottles and Rebel Yell can be had for $15/bottle. I actually found it at Trader Joes for $9.99 a bottle for awhile but that price just went up to $15 on my last visit to stock up.

Its not going to beat out the real top end bottles but if you’re looking for a good inexpensive daily drinker its a good option. I always keep at least one bottle in my bar at home so that I can save the real good stuff for special occasions.

I’ve tried a lot of different whisky/whiskey’s, but my choice is either Seagrams VO Gold for mixed drinks or, for a really good sipping whisky, my go to has always been Crown Royal. Whether it’s in the original purple bag or the high end XR, super smooth and tastes great. One of my co-workers gave me a bottle of Brother Justus out of Minneapolis. Hints of butterscotch, vanilla and almond. No bite and super smooth. I am also partial to Jameson as I got introduced to that at the distillery in Ireland. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

There are so many to enjoy out there. I myself seem to gravitate to a nice Rye. Templeton is very smooth and one of my favorites. However, in driving down to Florida this last month, we came across the MB Roland distillery in Kentucky. I really liked their Rye. And found a future vacation trip, if I can find a designated driver. Apparently a couple of whiskey trails to follow in both Tennessee and Kentucky.

Crown is my favorite- I drink some scotch but not often. One of my good friends is a Glenlevit (sp) fan and every time he comes over for a party he brings a bottle so right now, I have 1 partially full bottle and 4 unopened ones in my liquor stash!

As of now I drink them on the rocks with a splash of 7up in a lowball glass.

I’ll drink it either neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of water depending on my mood.

In theory adding a splash of water is the best way to drink it. I’ve seen articles giving scientific explanations for it but just a little water is supposed to enhance the flavors that you’d miss out on if you drink it neat.

I was getting a drink for a 90 something year old aunt of my fathers when she told not to add any ice to her Woodford Reserve, all it did was melt and ruin good bourbon

Canadian Hunter for the win! I kid I kid….

We do always have a 1.75 of Jameson in our house. I like it and my wife likes whiskey gingers. Whiskey gingers are always a cloud pleaser when you have people over too.
