I had a Humminbird Ice-35 because for the price it was the best bang for the buck. But 2 years ago the transducer went out so I got a Garmin Striker 4 plus. I like the graph and a-scope better than the flasher. Most of the units out there will last a long time. So you would have to find out if you want a flasher or one of the newer lcd electronic units.
Thanks Tightline for clarification of water clarity. I usually only fish there on the opener. Another guy on our boat kept catching small (10-12 inch) walleyes. But overall, we did not do as well as we had done in the past.
On my ICE 35, I make sure the transducer is near or below the ice. It will pick up the side wall of ice if the ducer is not deep enough on wide beam. If it was below the ice then there may have been some algae or something like that.
I have had an ICE-35 the first year they came out. I have had no issues what so ever with it. But a $175 for service seems a little steep. I would buy a new unit instead of paying for that.
Last time I was out the winds were at 20-25 mph. I anchored two corners and tied off one hub since the wind would pop it in with a big gust. I set it up and took it down by myself.
I have been out with wind gusts of 40 mph. Even in that wind, the hubs did real well. But you should have two of you to put it up and take it down.
Yeah, when I was out over New Years there were a lot of vehicles driving way too fast on the ice. The ice was booming loud. People need to slow down a bit.
