When you get primer make sure that what you buy is a self etching primer. If you don’t use a self etching primer, it simply sticks to the metal. an etching primer bonds much better. I have learned this lesson myself. The othr thing is to make sure the primer and paint are dry. it sounds simple, but auto body paint does not completely dry for weeks (ask an autobody tech). Also DON”T USE ANY CARWASH THAT TOUCHES THAT PAINT FOR AT LEAST A MONTH. Hand wash or touchless washes only. The brushes in automatic washes can put small grooves/maks in the paint untill it is completely dry. For best possible finish, wet-sand after the primer dries, and after the paint dries before waxing/buffing for minimal “orange peel”. Use 1500-2000 grit wetsand paper with lots of water. This will save LOADS of buffing.

There is really no where to go between Monti and ER, because almost every island is now a DNR SNA, and those that aren’t are now in a shooting ordinance. Upstream from Monti there are some good spots near the power plant, but you have to be careful, because if you setup within 500 yards of the plant, you will be arrested. If you have specific questions let me know.

I’ll keep a report going in the east central forum. You will have to give me ample waring about when you are thinking about going, I work every friday and every other weekend and have class moday through thursday so my schedule can be a little challenging. Otherwise if you come over and fish say Mille lacs, and are interested in another day of fishing during the week, I can key you in on some real good spots, even if I can’t make it out myself.

Cross is starting top open back up in the shallower areas. Most of the lake reamains skimmed with about 1/2″ of ice.

Hope this works, here is a pic with some of the crappies we’ve been catching before the ice started forming. The fillet knifer pictured is a rapala 6″ blabe that measures roughly 10″

are you looking for a portable trip, on Mille Lacs, or a full service house? Also, My neck of the woods is about 40 minutes east of Mille lacs, and I live on the lake i’m speaking of. So room and board would be cheap (i.e. free). Cross (my lake) is fed by the snake river, so channel cats are a frequent catch, along with those slabs and the occasional eye mixed in. Also there are some decent (30″+) sturgeon running around my lake too. And can’t forget the possibility of a muskie popping a jig stick or tip up.

Checked the ice like I promised i would. Was semi solid this morning, but with the warm weather and a slight breeze, she opened back up in some spots. I will keep a report coming so others can get out and enjoy that first ice fishing.

Any particular area you’d like to fish? I’m in eastern MN and have access to some superb slab fishing, with the occasional eye, and channel cat. Not to mention the chance of some sturgeon.

Cross has been iced over for the last couple days, and I’ll try to get a better report on the thickness this afternoon. I’m thinking if it doesn’t get too warm this week, it may be fishable next week.

There is quite a bit of public ground around the metro, but you have to wade through the other hunters. Depending where you live a hour drive can make a huge difference in hunting pressure. I used to hunt in the Maple Lake area on pubic land but got sick of dealing with other groups cutting us off, and various other problems. I would suggest the Willmar area, there is a lot of public land and it does not see as much pressure. Also Glenwood/Morris area has a lot of birds, and is stiill a reasonable drive form the metro.

I’ll be out on cross and or pokegama chasing some big slabs. See If I can’t connect with some decent cats also.

I have heard some friends of the family getting some decent eating eyes out there, but beyond that a tough lake to fish.

Hey, have you checked your local pawn shop. I see 870’s go for around 200 quite often.

If you want to walleye fish, I would reccomend the Monticello area. It tends to be a better area for whatever reason. The gravel flat in front of Montissippi park usually will produce a few. If you head just upriver from there, before you get to the power plant, there is a straight section that is all sand. This area can be really good for dragging lindy rigs, or jig and plastic/minnow. They like to lay behing the small “dunes” created by the current. I have drifted that area and got sone decent fish. If you end up fishing that area and are not in a motorized boat, I’d bring a shotgun, because that particular area is one of my favorites for migrating ducks, and local geese. Last year we really got into the wood ducks and mallards about 1/2 mile abouve the power plant.
