Got some fun news a while back. My daughter’s deer won the big buck contest at the taxidermist. Biggest officially measured for a MN harvested buck brought in to his shop. There were bigger that he had in, but not harvested in MN.

Anyhow, because it won, she gets a FREE mount! So cool. Plus it made the record books for Sibley County….measured 169 3/8 gross, and 160 2/8 net.

My daughter wanted to “name” the deer like they do on TV, so she called it Tallboy. My dad made this plaque for her for Christmas to go with the mount when it’s finished in either late May or perhaps early June.

Rainy Lake from July 11 – 18…..IF the border is open. If not, then just a weekend outing with my buddy up in northeast MN early August.

I hope we get to go to Canada. Family has been going for 40yrs. But if not, I’ll take my week off and hit local lakes.

Very nice deer! Far bigger than any I’ve ever shot. I’d love to take up bow hunting, but it’s not in the cards right now.

Here’s my biggest ever taken in 2007….BEFORE I had grey hair. Lol

Congrats on the first buck! After the first one it gets easier.
              Lol

When it comes to deer size, antler size, etc it’s going to be genetics for sure, and I’d imagine food sources as well. Some guys are 6’4 and others are 5’8. Some hit puberty sooner than others. My guess is it’s similar for deer, but I’m no expert. My brother and brother-in-law both harvested a basket 6 and basket 7. Both were likely the same age. The body of the 6 was FAR bigger though.

I don’t have any pics of their deer, but as shown in the other post which I kind of hijacked, here is my daughter’s deer. She is still giving me crap that I haven’t shot one that big…that I’ve been hunting 35yrs and she has hunted a total of 4hrs! Some day I will give her a bill for my guide fee! Haha

The entire event is a memory of a lifetime and we couldn’t have been more fortunate.

The week prior, I went out to my dad’s small 20ac parcel of woods and made a small ground blind against 2 fallen trees. Around 10:00am on opening day my daughter saw the deer coming behind us about 80yds out through the trees. At that time we only saw the body and I knew it was a big-bodied
deer. Suddenly about a half mile from us 3 shots ring out. The deer stops, turns around and walks away 10yds.

I was thinking it’s over, but then it turned back around and started walking back towards us. It got about 50yds away, lowered its head and all I saw was RACK lower to the ground! Immediately my mind goes “Huge buck! Huge buck! Don’t tell Madi! Huge buck!”
I just didn’t want her getting buck fever. Then the buck starts to cross the small frozen waterway where there’s only a few obstructions.

Just as I taught her, she said she didn’t even see the entire rack and was solely focused on placing her shot in the kill zone. She says “Dad I’m gonna shoot.” I told her to go ahead. She fires her shot and just like you see on all those hunting shows, it cringes, jumps, kicks up its hind legs and ran about 40yds just out of our sight behind a small ridge. I went running (I trashed the ground blind!), saw the deer lie down and yelled at my daughter to come over. She gets to me and the deer, sees it take its last few breaths and falls to her knees in a full-on cry. All I can think is oh no! It’s over. She just saw a deer expire and she’ll never hunt again! Asked her twice if she’s ok. “Yeah dad, I’m just so happy! It’s a happy cry!” I’ll never forget that moment!

All I can say is this….the amount of joy I experienced as a father watching my daughter harvest that deer is exponentially greater than had I shot the deer myself! It’s right up there with the days in which my son and daughter came into this world!

Yes she has! Heck, she hasn’t even shot a duck or goose yet.

One thing I told her…she should never get nervous shooting at another deer in the future. Haha

For certain! She still can’t go a day without rubbing it in! Just because I’ve deer hunted 34 years and haven’t gotten one that big…..

Well, we traded the Yamaha in for a new 15hp Merc EFI 4-stroke. BEST CHOICE EVER!!! That Merc fires right off and runs like a champ! It is absolutely perfect.

I got a Yamaha F150 on my fishing boat and it’s rock solid. Never had a single problem with it. But when it comes to small horsepower motors, MERCURY is the way to go!

Ok thanks. I got my brother in law coming from California in a couple weeks and just trying to figure out where to take him. I might just check it out in the next week or so to see what it looks like.

It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the lake with all its structure, islands, and a minimal amount of development for the most part. A nice bonus I wasn’t aware of is that the walleyes have a little bit of the blue tint to their tails, like the walleyes on my fly-in trip last year just not as much.

And on a side note, my Lakemaster chip was pretty spot on with all the structure and contours. I spent a few hours studying the lake on my handheld before heading up there. That’s half the fun IMO.

Well it was a great 2 days of fishing! Caught lots of walleyes, a few cigar northern and some pesky perch & rock bass. Some walleyes were in the 8-14″ range, but most were 15-18″ with the biggest at 22″. By far, jigs & 1/2 a crawler was best, but a few came on jigs & leeches. Chartreuse fuzzy grub in the 1/8oz size ruled the roost. Anchored on a point in 8ft and pitched jigs out into 12ft and snap jigged them back to the boat.

All in all an awesome 2 days of fishing….except for the 2-3″ of rain and 40minutes of hail Saturday afternoon! That was nasty! Will definitely be back next year!

Thanks a bunch for the info! That’ll help me narrow things down a bit without spending a whole bunch of time driving around the lake looking.

Hopefully I can put a little something together and get a few fish to bend the pole! I’ll put up a report when I get back.

Just returned from a 3 day/night stay in an Arnesen’s sleeper. Was getting really slushy out there. Still a good foot of snow on the lake so wheeled travel may be difficult. Fishing for us was incredibly slow. Slowest trip with Arnesen’s we’ve ever had. You can catch 500 dinks if you wanted, but anything near keeper size was one every 3hrs or more. No schools of keeper sized fish – all single nomads. We barely eeked out our 2 person limit over 3.5 days.
