for what it’s worth, highbanks had an update recently, they wont open till the day after christmas but out in front of there place there finding 2-5 inches of ice and not allowing even walkouts at this time.  i’ve read some reports of people fishing small bays on Winnie though.

its currently making ice and hearing reports of some lakes with about 8 inches of ice and some still open around the grand rapids area.  smaller lakes should be ok . the lakes that are open are bigger deeper bodies of water……the wind isnt helping either. we do have a cbin aboit 35 miles north and east of winnie so i do keep close tabs on whats going on up there.

anything related to the outdoors can be expensive. if your looking to not spend money on boats etc……go to the grocery store.

with that said there is something to be said of sitting on a lake fishing, enjoying the outside world and even catching yourself a meal of fish!!!!!! there’s no price you can put on relaxing in the world of outdoor activities. of any sort!!!!!!

I’m with you. Those early season bucks are pretty tasty. I have ran into bucks in the heat of the rut that are so pumped full of adrenaline that when you cut them open, the smell is horrible and they are destined for dog food. I think at this point, his dogs wouldn’t know what else to eat. They are spoiled to the core. Ground venison and duck eggs for dinner every night. Not a bad life for those pups.

now it works………. yea i guess a guy can spoil his 4 legged friend!!!!!!!!! i may be quilty of it myself now and then!!!!!

Not a hunter myself but my friend has family land in 240. I believe they have a total of 14 to this point. On pace to match the 24 they took last season. Pic of his opener morning buck. It’s family farm land so they fill every tag they get as the deer are a big liability to their crops.

With the advent of the Portable the opportunities for fish house rentals have gone way down hill except for the bigger waters. Mille Lac? Love the place, but not going to spend a hundred bucks for a day, and not be able to bring back at least Two Fish. Lake of the Woods? Awesome fishery!! But a bit far for “A Day’s Drive” from St Paul. Leech? Well……I’m at least still thinkin about Leech for this winter….maybe…..kinda sorta…so if ya gotta a guy to recommend?? Gone are the days of that last minute decision to through stuff in the trunk, and head out to rent a Crappie house within a hour or so of the Metro. Not to mention the Old Fart Factor!! LOL You know, the one where ya no longer have that urge to load all of that Stuff in the vehicle for Ice Fishing (if you even have a vehicle that is sufficient to do so any longer lol) then head out on a lake by your Lonesome….drill holes searching….shovel snow to set up your base…set up the 80lb house…get the heater going….scoop the holes…etc etc etc Then fish for two hours and reverse the process (chuckle) Who sells That T-Shirt? At any rate…..maybe again this winter, since I actually purchased a Minnesota fishing license this year!! Even got a Trout Stamp!! (that was a mistake, when I looked at all of the special this, and artificial only that, and catch and release only the other on the S.E. Steams that I fished years ago) If not, I always have Salt Water fishing in Mexico to look forwards to!! Since I can’t get the Girlfriend on the plane, a Solo Trip may be in order!! Here is a Mexican Crappie for ya! (chuckle) Keith

but wouldnt the point of renting a fishhouse be to spend a nite or 2 in one out on the ice??????

well i have very limited experience with renting fishhouses. 2 times on minnewaska up by glenwood and once from cookie on upper red lake.

cookies house was a castle compared to the glenwood ones……but they worked.
