Just be safe and talk to resorts before going out. Just heard that a Bomber was lost on LOW, and a side by side went to the bottom on Red. Did get a pic from LOW but cannot be sure how accurate those reports are.

We had the wolves come in on Saturday morning of opener (6 am – on trail cams) and cleared the woods. Hunted until Thursday before I saw anything. Did have two fawns browsing on twigs go by my stand on last weekend but let them walk — fun to see the little guys.
So no venison in our camp for 2022.Attachments:

That will make a nice meal!
Now that makes me hungry! Looks fantastic. I see you must be utilizing Walton’s – they have some great stuff!
Thanks again for the follow up. So your pic, I would guess that is a coyote with the bigger ears – am I correct? I bet you can guess I am not a fur bearer hunter… Sure would like to start but not confident in my ability yet to distinguish between the two.
I have one last pic to post since it always makes me chuckle. The answer to the age old question, yes, they do crap in the woods.

We will hear the coyotes yipping, then the timber wolves start howling and you will not hear a coyote again for the rest of the night. So both are definitely in the area. That sound sure makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end! Especially when you are still in your stand as dusk falls.
Have often thought of setting up to see if I could take a coyote and then having the hide tanned. I am just not comfortable knowing that if one came in I would know the difference. So the pointy nose is the best way to tell the difference? On these two other pics from last summer – you think those are also coyotes?

My dad always had stories of fishing on the St Croix at the old Nevers Dam north of Taylors Falls, and where the Sunrise and St Croix came together. He grew up in Almelund so it was just a short trip to get there. (the house he grew up in has been moved to a park right next to the Lutheran Church in Almelund) Pa was born in ’29, so that would of been in the 1940’s that they were fishing. Sturgeon, pike, catfish, walleye, bass, red horse and suckers – caught anything and everything back then — release was not an option, they had to eat! He always remembered one sturgeon as ok table fare, and the other not too good. Sure miss the stories…
So do you know if that is a lake, or shovel nose sturgeon?
Nice!!
Back in the 80’s while at UND did some shore fishing on the Red looking for cats but only got carp, some so big you could not turn them and they took all your line. That was the place to let the stress just ooze out of one’s soul – so relaxing. I just watch the MnDNR webinar on cat fishing, the difference between flat head and channel cats was interesting. From preferred habitat to what baits to use, a lot more to it than I thought.
So I assume you keep the cats for table fare. Any secrets to preparing them?
Mosquito’s and bugs bother you at all?
Looking Good!
I bet word will travel fast and many posts will popping quickly!
Looks like you had a fantastic outing! Devils Lake can be great, or it can humble you real quick too.
Now that it looks like you have a few meals — I have one for you to try out – if you are willing.
4 – 6 fillets
6 – 8 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup mushroom (diced)
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
salt and pepperPreheat oven to 350 degrees.
Dip fish in melted butter, salt, pepper and lemon juice mix.
Place fish fillets into shallow baking pan.
Place mushrooms and onions over the top of fish, then spoon any remaining butter mixture over fish.Bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes until fish flakes
The wife wanted us to try this out on my LOW fish since it does not include frying in oil – and I must admit, I did enjoy it more than I thought I would.
They are pretty when the sun hits them.
I am no expert on these, but I do believe these are coyotes with the smaller nose…
